The Rise and Fall of Mentor N400LL

One of the main stays and permanent fixtures of the Lima Lima flight team over the years has been Beech Mentor T-34B, N400LL.  The aircraft traces its roots back to the humble beginnings of the Lima Lima Flight Team at Naper Aero LL-10 in Naperville, IL.  A group of pilots established a flying club called Mentor Flyers in the mid 70’s and purchased this T-34 and registered it as N400LL.  Of the 15 or so members, at least 12 of them flew with the team over the years before buying their own T-34s.  Steve “Hoss” Smith bought out the standing members in 2015 and in turn sold it to Mark “Enigma” Miller in early 2020.

The deadly EF-4 tornado that hit London, KY in May of 2025 changed the trajectory of 400 into a pile of twisted metal and deposited her with 5 of her siblings into a non-salvageable ball of scrap.  The insurance company stepped in and sold the aircraft carcasses for scrap and Bill Wright purchased her for a project he is working on.  The demise of 400LL remains unclear, however if I was a betting man, I would say that she will rise from the ashes someday to fly another day!
